Australia Day Parade Report (2009)

Monday, February 16th, 2009

If you want the full report, please contact the Chair.

I am pleased to advise that the Australia Day Parade was a success from the Tongan outlook.

We had a large number of Tongans take part in the parade, including members of TCASA, TCR & other non members.

It was agreed by the TCASA Committee that we should have a BBQ at the end of the parade. I contacted the SAMEAC to see if this was ok. They checked with the Adelaide City Council (ACC) who advised that they would not permit a BBQ to be allowed, due to the fact that there were a number of caterers nearby, who had paid to set up their stalls. I then contacted a number of committee members who agreed that as it was probably going to be a hot day, we should seek another source of lunch, i.e Assorted Subway Rolls for the adults & McDonald’s for the kids.

As it turned out, it was a hot day & the lunch provided from TCASA’s funds proved very popular & easy to handle.

Before the parade, we were visited by Hieu Van Le, the Deputy Governor of SA, & Michael Harbison, the Lord Mayor of the  ACC, both who wanted to meet the Tongan Community & we were congratulated by both of them for our efforts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who took part in the parade, those who helped to decorate the truck & those who organised the luncheon.  It was a fun day, which helped the Tongan Community to once again get together & show South Australia a piece of our pride & culture.

Australia Day 2009

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

As usual, the Tongan Community will participate in the Australia Day Parade on Monday 26 January.

The format this year year has changed including the starting station. The sequence won’t be in alphabetical order as we saw in previous years. This time, there will be mixed groups. So stay tuned to your committee members on the day.

We will gather at Hindmarsh Square (map) from 8am onwards. We should be ready to go by 9am. Its going to be a short march to Elder Park, where there will be refreshment awaiting, thanks to the TaKASA Committee’s generosity.

Remember, this is a community event and all members of the Tongan community are encouraged to attend. If you’re from the country or other states, please join us on the day. It will be great to catch up with any Tongan visiting Adelaide. You can contact us here.
